This update is intended provide a general review of oral sedation in the dental office.  Oral sedation modalities have been proven to be not only safe but very effective. Proper medication selection and patient management, however, are paramount to maintaining this safe practice.

Anthony Caputo, DDS, FACD, FICD, DADBA, DNDBA:

Dr. Anthony Caputo graduated from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, School of Dentistry and then pursued residency training in Hospital Dentistry at UCLA followed by Anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Caputo has a private practice limited to anesthesia providing office-based care for pediatric and adult patients as well as patients with special needs for dentists throughout Arizona. As part of his private practice, he works with dental residents teaching various aspects of sedation and anesthesia administration for dental patients in the office-based setting. Dr. Caputo teaches and lectures locally and nationally on topics related to sedation and anesthesia administration including patient safety.

Dr. Caputo is a Diplomat of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. Dr. Caputo is Past President of the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists and currently serves as an Arizona Delegate to the ADA as well as Speaker of the House for the Arizona Dental Association.

He serves as an Assistant Program Director in Arizona for Lutheran Medical Center's Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency and is Faculty with the Dental Anesthesia and Pediatric Dentistry Residency programs. Dr. Caputo is a journal reviewer for Special Care in Dentistry, the journal of the Special Care Dentistry Association. Additionally, he teaches at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health. He is a sedation and anesthesia evaluator for the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners and has served on the Anesthesia Committee for the Board as well as being an Anesthesia expert for the Board.
