Overview

The Digital Patient Appointment: Intra-Oral Scanning, DS Core, Patient Autonomy, and Digital Workflow Integration

This 1.5-hour continuing education program is designed to help dentists understand how digital technologies can improve clinical workflows, patient comprehension, autonomy, treatment acceptance, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The presentation addresses daily workflow challenges, the ethical principle of patient autonomy, digital technology milestones, intraoral scanning and digital acquisition techniques, cloud-based digital patient communication, real-time imaging collaboration, AI-supported diagnostic aids, caries/periapical lesion detection workflows, and the financial and clinical value of using digital tools across the dental team.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this 1.5 CE program, participating dentists should be able to:
  1. Identify common daily clinical workflow barriers—such as time constraints, patient comprehension gaps, periodontal assessment demands, education needs, examination flow, documentation, and dismissal—and describe how digital systems can reduce friction during patient appointments.
  2. Explain the ethical and clinical relevance of patient autonomy in dental care, including the dentist's responsibility to involve patients meaningfully in treatment decisions while protecting confidentiality and respecting patient values.
  3. Describe how intraoral scanning, radiographs, intraoral images, CBCT, and cloud-based patient records can be combined to create a multidimensional “digital patient” for diagnosis, treatment planning, education, collaboration, insurance documentation, and follow-up.
  4. Compare traditional impression and analog communication workflows with digital acquisition workflows, including how scanning and real-time visualization may improve patient experience, case presentation, efficiency, and interdisciplinary communication.
  5. Discuss the role of cloud-based and related digital platforms in centralizing patient images, scans, radiographs, CBCT data, treatment plans, and shared communications across clinical and administrative team members.
