Current Guidelines for How Dentists Can Recognize and Treat TMD and Orofacial Pain and How These Issues are Related to Sleep Disordered Breathing

This is a full day course designed to familiarize dental and medical professionals and staff with the relatively new field of TMD, Orofacial Pain and Sleep Disordered Breathing, and teach them how to recognize and treat these disorders.


Objectives:

  • The new ADA, Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) approved field of TMD, Orofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Medicine

  • Becoming familiar with all of the disorderes treated by dentists who are formally trained in the new field

  • How to screen for and recognize TMD and Orofacial Pain

  • Common causes of TMD and Orofacial Pain. Is it always caused by a bad bite?

  • How to do a thorough exam and diagnose TMD and Orofacial Pain including how to choose appropriate imaging methods

  • Common treatments for TMD and Orofacial Pain including how to use appliances and medications and other therapies

  • How to recognize and treat non dental tooth pain, which may be caused by migraines, trigeminal nerve disorders or muscle referred pain

  • The relationship of TMD and Orofacial Pain to sleep disordered breathing

  • When and how to refer out for diagnosis and treatment of difficult cases

  • Answer any question that participants have regarding diagnosis and treatment of these disorders

Joseph R Cohen, DDS:

Dr.  Cohen is founder of Southwest Pain Management Associates, an Orofacial Pain (OFP) management clinic in Arizona.  His practice focuses on (OFP) including migraine,  tension headaches, atypical tooth pain, trigeminal neuralgia, Obstructive Sleep Apnea and temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD).

He is part time faculty at the Arizona School for Dentistry and Oral Health, where he is director of the Orofacial Pain Program and also teaches part time for UCLA and LMC/NYU OFP residencies.

 He frequently lectures nationally and internationally.

 He is a Fellow and past president of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. He has also recently been selected to be a Fellow of the American Headache Society.
