Hands-On Target Audience: This course is encouraged for Dentists and Dental Hygienists. The administration of successful local anesthesia is often elusive and challenging. It requires strong knowledge of anatomy, understanding the available drugs for effective local anesthesia and a reliable technique. Establishing this strong foundation of local anesthesia administration will provide the necessary skill and ability to routinely administer successful, comfortable and predictable local anesthesia. The achievement of profound anesthesia is a critical component of any dental practice allowing your patients to have confidence that their procedure will be comfortable and trust in you.

 

Hands-On Course Description: There will be a discussion of oral anatomy involved with local anesthesia administration with a review of the commonly administered local anesthesia solutions for dentistry. The focus will be on reliable and effective local anesthesia delivery techniques making the achievement of profound anesthesia predictable. Any dentist or dental hygienist desiring successful local anesthesia administration for patients will want to attend this course!

 

Hands-On Course Objectives: Following the course, participants should be able to;

 

  1. Know the oral anatomy involved with local anesthesia administration
    • Maxillary Landmarks
    • Mandibular Landmarks
  2. Know the commonly administered local anesthetics in dentistry
    • Understand approaches for local anesthetic selection
    • Understand the importance of calculating maximum dosing for local anesthetic drugs
  3. Know the most reliable techniques for local anesthesia administration
    • Infiltration
    • Blocks
  4. Understand the concept of Reinforcement with local anesthesia administration
  5. Understand advanced block techniques for local anesthesia
    • Modified Inferior Alveolar Nerve Block
    • Division II Nerve Block

Meet Our Speaker(s):

Biography: Dr. Caputo graduated from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, School of Dentistry and then pursued residency training in Hospital Dentistry at UCLA followed by Anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Caputo has a private practice limited to anesthesia providing office-based care for pediatric and adult patients as well as patients with special needs for dentists throughout Arizona. He is a Diplomat of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. Dr. Caputo is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. He serves as the Senior Associate Director of the West-Central Zone for Lutheran Medical Center's Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency and is Faculty with the Dental Anesthesia and Pediatric Dentistry Residency programs. Dr. Caputo is a journal reviewer for Special Care in Dentistry, the journal of the Special Care Dentistry Association. Additionally, he teaches at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health. He is a sedation and anesthesia evaluator for the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners and serves on the Anesthesia Committee for the Board as well as being an Anesthesia expert for the Board. Dr. Caputo is Past President of the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists and currently serves as an Arizona Delegate to the ADA as well as Speaker of the House for the Arizona Dental Association.
