Infection Prevention and Governmental Requirements Made Easy

Kay Carl, RN, BS, Infection Preventionist:

Daughter of a hygienist and married to a dentist, Kay is an infection Preventionist who has been Board Certified in Infection Control and Epidemiology for over 30 years.  This specialty is renewed by examination every 5 years.

Active in the hospital-focused infection control organization, Association for Practitioners in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), including serving as a national officer for four years, she has used this knowledge to cross over into dental infection control.

The majority of her peers are RNs, MPHs, and laboratory professionals who work in hospitals in departments that specifically address Infection Prevention.  Specialists in the field, they are equipped to deal with government standards and guidelines. Dentists are expected to do the same without similar professional support. Kay has developed a model that can be used in dental facilities providing the same standards to their practices in an easy and practical manner.

In her career, Kay has lectured for both medical and dental audiences from international to local settings. She has authored articles for Inscriptions, the Journal of the Arizona Dental Association (AzDA), for infectious diseases/infection control continuing education.  These articles are CERP accredited and are available on their website, at https://www.azda.org.   In addition, she authors the Infection Prevention and OSHA Toolkit for Dental Professionals and Trainers.  This is updated yearly and is a comprehensive guide for your office including OSHA plans that are in word format and easy to adapt to your practice, also available on the AzDA website, key word, OSHA.

Kay was the editor of the Dental Services Chapter written by Drs. John Molinari and Jennifer Harte for the APIC Text of Infection Control and Epidemiology for three editions.  She consults for the Arizona dental community with an emphasis on Best Practices for Infection Prevention, OSHA and Risk Management.
